Common Heating Problems

An HVAC technician experienced in repairing furnaces may consider a number of possible problems when diagnosing the problem with your heater. Once a diagnosis is determined, your technician can go about making the necessary repairs to get your system up and running like you expect!

Some possible heating problems you might encounter can include:

  • Pilot light fails to stay on – Many newer systems use an electric ignition while older ones might rely on a pilot light to stay in operational condition. If either of these fails, however, your furnace will fail to work like normal. The sensors might be dirty or there could be a clog, and only a technician will be able to identify the exact problem in order to make the necessary fixes.
  • Blower continuously runs – If you have problems with your blower, such as finding it continuously running even if the heater has reached the desired temperature, your limit switch might have a problem and need to be replaced. A technician with the right parts for your model of furnace can both diagnose this problem and repair it in no time at all.
  • Heater blows cold air – If your furnace previously worked like normal and now blows cold air, make sure you have the desired temperature set. You might also increase the desired temperature slightly to see if it makes a difference. If it still blows cooler air, a number of possible problems might be present such as poorly performing duct work with leaks, issues with the pilot light staying on, and other issues.
  • Furnace is noisy or starts to sound noisier than usual – HVAC systems are designed to be quieter. Most of the time you won’t even notice it is on. However, if you experience a furnace that suddenly sounds louder, it could indicate something is wrong with it. Common noise complaints may include descriptive words like rumbling, squeaking, or rattling when describing furnaces with this issue.
  • Reduced air flow – Your furnace might be working well, but if you have noticed the air flow isn’t the same as it used to be, there could be a problem with the system. One possible solution is replacing a dirty air filter. An air filter that fails to work properly can make your system less efficient and cause other problems such as a blower that continuously runs from a damaged limit switch. Leaky duct work can also be attributed to reduced air flow and is usually something technicians are more likely to see in older systems.
  • Cycles frequently from “on” to “off” – If you notice your HVAC system turns on, then off, then back on again while the heater is being used, there are a few possible problems such as issues with the thermostat, a clogged filter, or airflow problems. An experienced technician such as those at Design Aire will know what to look for in order to offer up the best solution for your situation
  • Bad smell such as a moldy smell or unpleasant burning smell – An HVAC system with a bad smell is never a good sign. If you notice a mold smell, you might have ductwork problems or a poorly draining system that has mold buildup. If you experience an unpleasant burning smell, turn your system off immediately and contact a technician to diagnose and repair your heater. Don’t let these problems linger as they could signal larger issues that can be expensive to fix down the road!

The problems above and others with your furnace can seem frustrating at the time, but with the help of experienced HVAC repair technicians like those at Design Aire, you can rest easy knowing your system is taken care of the correct way from the start.

Additionally, performing basic maintenance on your heater can prevent a litany of common problems. In addition to repairing furnaces, Design Aire offers heating maintenance plans to keep your heater running whenever you need it. We offer flexible scheduling to work with your needs and many other benefits for our customers who invest in a maintenance plan for their furnace.

“One of the best companies to work with. My own profession is in a service industry and so I very much appreciate all the positive things about Design Aire.
The install crew arrived right on time and took exactly how much time they said they would to complete the job. The work was done well, the crew cleaned up after themselves, and were very pleasant. Seth in the office was extremely in-tune to our needs and very responsive.
I would highly recommend Design Aire. ”

“Design Aire sent a salesman to plan the system, and just a couple of days later sent the installers to remove the old system and install the new one. Everything happened when they said it would and the system performs as they said it would. All of the Design Aire staff were courteous, the work was performed efficiently and neatly, and they left the area cleaner than they found it. This is the second unit Design Aire has installed for us, and I have no need to look elsewhere.”
