Clean or Replace Your Filter

Your furnace filter is usually installed where the return duct enters your furnace. It serves a crucial job by removing all kinds of particulates from the air before it moves into the furnace equipment and is heated. Particulates may include dust, dust mites, pollen, pet dander, bacteria, spores, and more. After the filter has been in place for a while, it gets full of debris. A dirty filter results in inadequate airflow and the furnace won’t operate as efficiently as it was designed because it has to work harder to pull air through the densely packed filter.

How often you need to change your filter may depend on things such as how often you clean and whether or not you have pets. A good rule of thumb is to check the filter monthly for debris. If you can see hair and dust on the surface, then replace the filter or wash it if it’s a reusable kind.

Ensure All Vents Are Open and Unblocked

In order for your furnace to work efficiently, the air in your house must be able to circulate completely throughout your home. Make sure your registers are not blocked by furniture, boxes, or other household items and ensure dust is not trapped in the cover.

Keep the Area Around the Furnace Clear

Most furnaces are usually located in the basement, a crawl space, or a storage room. However, your furnace isn’t designed to operate with extra belongings around it. This is a safety issue because there is burning gas in the furnace, but it also helps the furnace run smoother because air can circulate freely. It’s important to keep a three- to five-foot area around your furnace completely clear of stored items. Anything flammable (clothes, paint, aerosols, gasoline, boxes, etc.) should not be placed in the general vicinity of your furnace or water heater.
